Name That Disease #10

Can you figure out what disease this man has?

This man has leprosy. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and symptoms include nerve damage, disfiguring sores, and slowly advancing debilitation. When exposed, children are more likely to catch the disease than adults.  As you probably already know, in the past the disease had no cure and leper colonies were formed to separate those infected from the rest of the population to prevent spread of the disease. Now, the disease is actually rather easily treatable through the use of antibiotics and isolation is not needed. Treatment will make a person non-infectious and as such they can continue on with their lives without worry of spreading the disease to others. The earlier the disease is caught and treated, the less permanent damage will occur. There is, however, a growing concern as drug-resistant forms of the disease emerge.

  1. A rather entertaining and informative podcast on the disease is available at Caustic Soda (they've done a few shows on diseases of various kinds, their shows are an odd mix of irreverent humor and honest interest in the subjects).

  2. You can get leprosy from armadillos:

When we lived in Florida 'squashed footballs' were everywhere on the roads in the summer.

  3. Thinks for the link Pai, that's really a nice podcast. In the informative sense, that is. Leprosy is really a rather disgusting disease in the advanced form.

Jess, I actually completely forgot about that! Thanks for the link. I wonder how often it's confirmed that an armadillo was the source of the disease? It doesn't look like they have a definite number.
